While I can appreciate that fiction is, after all, just fiction. I also believe any art is meaningless unless there are those that FEEL it. In their bones, their veins, with every breath they take. Authors know that, most of them. They write for their readers, for the most part. It’s not so much the private musings in a diary as “come, let me share this wonderful idea with you.”

So you can imagine my surprise at the way some dedicated fans are being treated right now. That they are being painted as unhinged psychopaths.

I see everyone rushing to defend the author… but… why not the readers? And I’m not talking about the FEW psychos SUPPOSEDLY sending her death threats (I have not seen proof of a single one…) I’m talking about the betrayed and the heartbroken. The rightfully angry ones. Is this one of those “celebrities are above the law” things? The “poor” famous person.. all her ~~cash cows~~ readers are being SOOOO mean to her. Um… right… Charlaine Harris goes on about the virulent hatred and anger and ugliness… and surprisingly she isn’t talking about her sad excuse of a book. She’s talking about her readers.

Let me say that again. Her readers. The ones who have gone around buying her books for the last decade or so. And loving them, enjoying them, being emotionally invested in them. I would think it was an author’s dream if their books were loved with this much passion! And I have seen authors who are amazing to their readers. This contempt for her readers, saying they are “entitled”… it’s terrible of her.

I cringed a little when she threw a little public pity party because one of her books ended up on a list of the worst books of that year. Mind you, ONE book on ONE list. It showed her emotional maturity I think… that she couldn’t take it. How many authors have been on those lists? How many have publicly whined about it? No, seriously, tell me? I’m curious. And her constant cry of “help! I’m the victim!” in the past few weeks has been very off putting. Falsely accusing a reader of spoiling the ending out of MALICE was equally bad. When she should have blamed the booksellers if anyone. And burying her head in the sand to avoid the controversy she knew was coming… weak.

I, for one, am glad she has ended these. And the way she has, has effectively killed any passion I might have once had for any of her characters (now strangers to me since DEA). Like someone in a review said, I now care about her characters just as much as she now seems to.

I have never before not finished a series but if the spoilers are true about dead ever after then I’m about to make this series the first. The last book was filler that went nowhere really just to fulfill her contract and the way it’s rumouored she ends this is ridiculous with absolutely NO links to the previous books. She’s lost me I wont bother with another of her series.
